Since starting as a local radio intern in the early 2000s, Charlamagne tha God has soared to massive heights. He grew up in Moncks Corner, a small town in South Carolina, and despite falling into the wrong crowd at a young age, the 46-year-old knew he was going to overcome it.
“I always, for some reason, knew that I was bigger than the environment that I was in,” he told NPR in 2022.
Thanks to his bold comedic interview style and willingness to push boundaries, Charlamagne has interviewed some of the biggest names in entertainment such as Nicki Minaj, Jeezy, Kevin Hart, Kanye West, and several others. Additionally, he also sat down with Kamala Harris during her 2024 presidential campaign. While most people know Charlamagne tha God from his hit morning show, The Breakfast Club, the media personality has been in the business for over 18 years and continues to evolve. So when the question “Who is Charlamagne tha God” is raised, there is surely more than one answer.
Charlamagne tha God’s early radio jobs included an internship with Z93 Jamz in Charleston. He advanced to WHTX in Columbia before branching outside of South Carolina. In 2006, Uncle Charla, as he is affectionally known, landed his first major gig as a second mic to iconic radio host Wendy Williams during her The Wendy Williams Experience radio show. Once the show ended in 2008, he moved on to Philadelphia’s 100.3 The Beat, where he remained only until 2009.
The year 2010 gave Charlamagne his biggest opportunity to date when he was chosen to co-host The Breakfast Club, alongside DJ Envy and Angela Yee. Their platform became one of the biggest in entertainment, specifically among artists, who frequently stop by the show to promote their projects and new music. Their years of hard work paid off in 2020, when the trip was inducted into the Radio Hall of Fame in 2020.
As a way to empower creators, Charlamagne launched the Black Effect Podcast Network in 2020. In collaboration with iHeart, the network gives media personalities such as J. Valentine of the R&B Money Podcast, and comedian Jess Hilarious, who replaced Angela Yee on The Breakfast Club. The focus of the network is to amplify Black podcasters and talent.
Though Charlamagne’s own show, The Brilliant Idiots podcast with Andrew Schulz, is on the Loud Speaker Network, he continues to support and promote the entertainers a part of his network. Additionally, he has launched the Black Effect Podcast Festival, which will take place for the second year in 2025.
The adored husband and father of two has shown his depth with several bestselling books. In 2017, the author unveiled his first piece, Black Privilege: Opportunity Comes to Those Who Create It. The self-help was published by the Simon & Schuster imprint Touchstone. His second release arrived the following year, Shook One: Anxiety Playing Tricks on Me. This book was a transparent look into the comedian’s fears and strong desire to be a good dad to his daughters, and spouse and remain grounded in his Southern roots.
His third book arrived in 2024, Get Honest or Die Lying: Why Small Talk Sucks, another self-help book detailing why more relevant conversations needed to be had. With such an illustrious career, touching nearly every facet of media, Charlamagne tha God will go down in history as one of the most successful voices in entertainment. Whether you’re a fan of his literature, commentary or more recent political perspectives, his impact is undeniable.
