The big winners from Sunday night’s Emmys included The Studio, The Pitt and Adolesence, as the Apple TV+, HBO Max and Netflix shows upset projects such as HBO’s The White Lotus.
As we previously reported, Tramell Tillman made history as the first Black and first openly gay actor to win Outstanding Supporting Actor in a Drama Series. The Studio, The Pitt and Adolescence won the top category for Drama Series, Comedy Series and Limited Series.
The Pitt also nabbed two acting wins with Noah Wyle in Lead Actor and Katherine LaNasa in Supporting. Adolescence swept its acting categories with acting wins for Stephen Graham, Owen Cooper and Erin Doherty, while Cristin Milioti won for The Penguin. Hacks nabbed another acting win for Jean Smart, while delivering Hannah Einbinder’s first.

The Late Show With Stephen Colbert won outstanding talk series at the 2025 Primetime Emmy Awards on Sunday (Sept. 14), two months after CBS’s stunning announcement on July 17 that they were canceling the show. Stephen Colbert‘s win was greeted with a standing ovation at the Ovation Theater at L.A. Live.
Actually, Colbert received a standing ovation even before he won, when he presented the first award of the night. “While I have your attention, is anyone hiring?,” he joked. “’Cause I’ve got 200 very well-qualified candidates with me here tonight who’ll be available in June. I also brought my own resume with me tonight.”
When Colbert won the Emmy, later in the broadcast, he took the high road. “I want to thank CBS for giving us the privilege of being part of the late-night tradition, which I hope continues long after we’re no longer doing this show.” He concluded his remarks with a comment that suggested he is looking to his post-CBS future. “If the elevator tries to bring you down, go cray and punch a higher floor.”

This was Colbert’s 11th career Emmy, but it was his program’s first win in that top category, following eight consecutive losses. Colbert’s previous show, The Colbert Report, won back-to-back awards in a predecessor category, outstanding variety series, in 2013-14. As an executive producer of the show, Jon Stewart won his 25th Primetime Emmy. He is closing in on the all-time Emmy winner, producer Sheila Nevins, who has won 31 awards.
The other nominees in the category were Jimmy Kimmel Live! and The Daily Show.
Jimmy Kimmel Live! lost a top program award for the 14th consecutive year, though this year wasn’t really a fair contest. Many voters rallied behind Colbert for reasons that went beyond simply admiring his show. Jimmy Kimmel’s program was nominated three times for outstanding variety series and now 11 times for outstanding variety talk series.
The Daily Show was last year’s winner in this category. In addition, The Daily Show With Jon Stewart won 11 times and The Daily Show With Trevor Noah won once.
Comedian Nate Bargatze hosted the show, which, by coincidence, aired on CBS, the network that received industry ire for axing Colbert. (The three legacy networks – ABC, CBS and NBC – and Fox air the show on a rotating basis.)
Tramell Tillman has made history with his Emmy win on Sunday night for Severance Season 2.
In winning the award for Best Supporting Actor in a Drama Series for his performance as Seth Milchick in the Apple TV+ drama series, he is the first Black actor to nab the trophy. The Supporting Actor category was the only Emmys category to not have a Black winner.
Tillman is also the first openly gay Black man to be nominated in and win the category.
He won the award over co-stars Zach Cherry and John Tuturro, as well as The White Lotus‘s Walton Goggins, Jason Issacs and Sam Rockwell, and Paradise‘s James Marsden.
The actor paid tribute to his mother in his acceptance speech.

Your loving kindness stays with me, and this is for you. Thank you to the Academy. I am full. I am humbled. I am honored. And as my mama would say, ‘Look at God.’”
‘Severance’ led to to his ‘Mission Impossible’ franchise role
Tillman told Blavity’s Shadow and Act earlier this year that his role in Severance led to him being cast in Mission: Impossible – The Final Reckoning.
“Well, I learned that [director/co-writer] Christopher McQuarrie is a huge fan of Severance. And so as I chatted with him, he told me that he was a big fan of Milchick as well,” Tillman said. “So, you know, I think the success of the show and my work on the show Severance really did set me up, because if he hadn’t seen it, I wouldn’t have been in a Mission: Impossible [film], you know? And he’s such a talented and wonderful director and writer. The man knows how to tell a story.”
Season 3 of the show is anticipated to debut in 2026 or 2027.
A Thousand Tomorrows was released in 2023 and was introduced to a larger audience via Netflix in September 2025. It has captured the hearts of faith-based drama fans. This six-episode miniseries stars Colin Ford as bull rider Cody Gunner, and Rose Reid as barrel racer Ali Daniels. It was adapted from Karen Kingsbury’s 2005 novel of the same name. Is ‘A Thousand Tomorrows’ a true story?

While A Thousand Tomorrows feels incredibly personal and emotionally grounded, it is not a true story in the most literal sense. The author, Karen Kingsbury, has spoken about how her husband introduced her to rodeo culture, which eventually became a foundation for Cody and Ali’s world. In addition to this element, which was taken from her real-world influences, Kingsbury was deeply moved by a story of a woman with cystic fibrosis who received a lung transplant from her son.
This real event, as reported by The Direct, heavily influenced Ali Daniel’s character arc. As the author shared, “I was talking to a friend and she was having a really hard day, and she told me that it had been the one-year anniversary of her daughter-in-law’s passing. And she went on to explain that the daughter-in-law had passed from cystic fibrosis. And then she added another layer. She said, ‘Not only that, but my son gave her one of his lungs.’ And I said, Oh my goodness. He gave her a lung and it didn’t work.”
While viewers won’t find Cody and Ali in the history books, the very real struggles, faith and hope portrayed in the show are drawn from deeply human truths. The authenticity of those inspirations is part of why the series resonates so strongly with audiences.
What is cystic fibrosis?
As Kingsbury explores in her novel, cystic fibrosis is a genetic disorder that primarily impacts the lungs and digestive system, per the National Institute of Health (NIH). It causes thick, sticky mucus to build up in the body, making it harder for people to breathe. This condition also makes them vulnerable to frequent infections. Basically, people living with CF can experience routine illnesses, but they can become life-threatening. For example, something like pneumonia could be a more intense diagnosis for someone with CF.
And in the show, Ali Daniels’ character faces the harsh realities of the condition. It forces her to balance her passion for barrel racing with her fragile health. As SoapCentral reports, she undergoes a lung transplant in A Thousand Tomorrows. And while the surgery brings temporary relief and hope, the disease ultimately returns and impacts her new lungs. This plot line highlights the relentless nature of CF and builds some dramatic tension.
Does Ali die in ‘A Thousand Tomorrows’?
A big part of this emotional storyline concerns Ali’s struggle with her health. Spoiler alert: the end of the season may be more somber than viewers expect, as MovieDelic shares. Ali’s story ends tragically after contracting pneumonia in the season one finale. This happens only after she pushes herself to fulfill her lifelong dream despite her worsening health. She decides to compete in one final barrel racing tournament and her passion and stubborn determination give the show an emotional peak. But the move costs her dearly.
Although her earlier lung transplant briefly improved her condition, the disease’s return and her fragile immune system left her unable to recover. So Ali passes away in the final episode of the show, which is a devastating blow. Before her death, she gives her beloved horse, Ace, to Cody. This symbolized her trust, love and the future she dreamed for him. Her death is one of the most powerful events in A Thousand Tomorrows, reminding viewers that while love and faith can transcend hardship, they cannot always prevent loss.
Is there a season two of ‘A Thousand Tomorrows’?

As a unit, the family is quite the spectacle, driven by greed, lust and a hunger for power by any means possible, which Lawson hints is no different from how our own families operate, just perhaps not to the same degree.
“Kimmie is a wrench in the machinery,” he said of Taylor Polidore Williams’ character in a recent interview with Blavity’s Shadow and Act. “Between Olivia (Debbi Morgan) and Norman, their wheels are rolling, so the machinery was operating. It was functioning. They were making their money. They were doing their thing, and then Kimmie comes along, and her presence throws a wrench into the machinery. Like someone sticking a pipe in the forks of your bike, and it flips the bike upside down. Now, you gotta deal with this stranger who doesn’t know what she’s doing, at least we don’t think she does, and we’ve gotta deal with this unknown entity in our very known world. It’s a big buzzard in the potato salad — not a fly, it’s like a buzzard.”
No one knows you like family, which is why Kimmie’s new dynamic with the Bellaries is different than what they’re used to.
“You know who’s gonna be drunk, you know who made some sweet potato pie that they needed to leave home because it don’t taste like much,” Lawson said, reflecting on how individuals often know what to expect from their family members. “You know grandma’s going to be over there, kind of judging everything. But with this new thing, it’s an unknown entity, and it’s like you don’t know what to do and how to deal with it because she ain’t going to do nothing but get in the middle and mess things up.”
Exploring the moral complexities of Norman
As an actor whose career spans decades, Lawson said Norman is a totally different character than what he’s played in the past. At the same time, however, there are parts of himself that inform his approach to the role.
“No characters are all one color; that’s the interesting thing about good drama, is that there’s contradiction everywhere,” the Poltergeist actor said. “In this character, there’s a contradiction in his ability to love, you know? Interestingly enough, the family is at war. There is a lot of love within the family, as there is in all families. It’s just who has control and who’s going to get the lion’s share of the pie when it’s all broken down. Everybody is vying for that.”
He added, “In regard to what part of Norman do I relate to, what part of myself do I borrow to the character of Norman? … I love deeply, I love passionately, and I have a sense of fashion, style, and design. Norman is very conscious of taking care of himself. He looks good. Everybody has a dark side. As an actor, you have to be really clear about your light and dark. What is the 24 hours of your day? There’s 12 hours of light and 12 hours of darkness. That’s what gives balance to all of us. The dark side of us is important for us to be able to survive. We create the dark side of us to protect ourselves from the rest of the world, or within the dynamic of the family. You’d better learn how to fight for yours, be a little selfish, be able to be strong, be able to be in control, so that you don’t have to be the weak one. I use a lot of Richard. Now, what part of Richard? People will have to discern that for themselves because most people have never seen me play a character as diabolical as he is.”
Further exploring his shadow side, Lawson said that leaning into the dark energy can often yield the best creativity.
“I have two alter egos. There’s Richard, who’s always over there, and this is the studious one, with black-rim glasses with the tape in the middle. He has a short haircut, and he’s a spiritual dud, and he knows everything,” Lawson explained. “He says, ‘Don’t do this, no do this. Get off this plan. She’s not good for you. Don’t do it.’ And the other side I’d call Tricky Dick.Tricky Dick wants to get into everything. And they argue with one another. These two sides of me are very real in terms of the spiritual, giving, loving side, and the darker person that will take it right to the edge and go right to the edge of this slippery slope, and sometimes will slip into the abyss. Then, I have to pull myself back out and listen because, again, you borrow to the characters you play.”

Outside of his work as an actor, Lawson takes excellent pride in mentorship and teaching. His school, Richard Lawson Studios, which was formed in 2005, is just one example of the ways he uses his knowledge to empower others.
With his book, The Artist’s Roadmap: Navigating Your Career in Show Business, he aims to help people navigate the nos on their respective paths to success. Lawson also said his character in Beauty in the Black could learn a thing or two from the text.
“If Richard could advise Norman, it would be to process, pivot and proceed,” Lawson said. “You gotta take what you are challenged by because you can’t control what happens to you, but you can control how you react to it. You have to pivot and decide where you’re going, what you’re going to do, and then proceed and get on with it. You have to have radical acceptance, so that you don’t get mired down in the depths and the abyss of hell chasing the ghost of revenge. I would say to Norman that for him to have a good life going forward and hopefully meet another woman whom he can love in a new way, whatever this new combination and frequency creates love, that he can do that by pivoting and proceeding.”
Maintaining a life rooted in purpose
To conclude our interview, Lawson reflected on how having a purpose is far greater than the roles he takes on or the projects that he is a part of as an actor.
“I am guided by my purpose, blessed, to really be clear. I had a revelation during the very first production I ever did, that I was put on this earth to do this. This is my purpose, and from that moment to this moment, I have been on vacation the entire time,” he said.
Lawson continued, “For me, I’ve had that North Star as my purpose in front of me. And my purpose is not acting and performing. My purpose is to help people achieve their dreams. I’m a dream whisperer. I like to help people achieve their dreams, and this is a platform for me to be able to gain the kind of agency to be able to help more and more people in the world, so that through my work, people are motivated, moved, or challenged or whatever. Then it allows me to help people achieve their dreams. So I’m a motivator. I’m an empowerer. I teach, I have a school and I’ve been teaching thousands of people over the past 45 years. Many of them come back to me and speak about how their lives have changed, or they recall the words I’ve said. I’m a giver, and I’m giving. That’s the whole reason I’m here. So, it’s not about whether I get the next job. It’s not about whether I’m working on television. It’s about the platform I have to minister to people, to know that their dreams don’t have expiration dates, and it’s never too late to find your purpose. Then, it’s about watering the plants that need attention, helping other people grow. We can’t keep it unless we give it away.”

The series will star Spence Moore II and Charlie Mann as Ghost and Tommy, and they join the previously cast MeKai Curtis who currently stars as young Kanan on Power Book III: Raising Kanan.
Moore and Mann take over the roles that were played by Omari Hardwick and Joseph Sikora in the OG Power series.

Power: Origins will continue to explore the Power universe in fresh and compelling ways, delving into the action-packed origin story of fan-favorite characters Ghost and Tommy as ambitious young entrepreneurs on the rise, determined to make their mark on the streets of New York City. A fun, rambunctious exploration of a new time period in the Power franchise, Power: Origins will highlight the unbridled audacity of young men not just leveling up, but determined to become legends in the game.
Power: Origins is set to be the fourth spinoff of Power, following Power Book II: Ghost, Power Book III: Raising Kanan and Power Book IV: Force. Ghost ended last year, and as we mentioned, the upcoming season of Kanan is its last. The upcoming season of Force is its last as well. However, a fifth potential spinoff, Power: Legacy, which would see Michael Rainey Jr.’s Tariq and Joseph Sikora’s Tommy return, is in early development at the network.
Power Book III: Raisng Kanan showrunner will also be the showrunner for this series, and he co-wrote the pilot with original Power creator, Courtney A. Kemp. The Power universe series are executive produced by Kemp through her End of Episode banner, Curtis “50 Cent” Jackson through his G-Unit Film and Television, Mark Canton through Canton Entertainment, Chris Selak, Kevin Fox and Pete Chatmon.
Lionsgate Television produces the series for Starz.
Prime Video has renewed the comedy series Overcompensating for a second season. Created by and starring Benito Skinner, the series is produced by A24, Strong Baby and Amazon MGM Studios.
“I have been so overwhelmed by the insane response to the show, and feel so damn lucky to go back to Yates University with Amazon MGM Studios, A24, Strong Baby, and this legendary cast for Season 2!! PLAY SUPER BASS :),” said Skinner in a statement.

The series also stars Wally Baram, Mary Beth Barone, Adam DiMarco and Rish Shah, with Holmes, Corteon Moore, Owen Thiele and Nell Veraque as recurring. Connie Britton, Kyle MacLachlan, Kaia Gerber, Julia Shiplett, Tommy Do, Alexandra Beaton, Claire Qute, Elias Azimi and Maddie Phillips are recurring guest stars.
What is ‘Overcompensating’ about?

Overcompensating is a college-set ensemble comedy about the wild, chaotic journey of Benny (Skinner), a closeted former football player and homecoming king, as he becomes fast friends with Carmen (Baram), a high school outsider on a mission to fit in at all costs. With guidance from Benny’s older sister (Barone) and her campus-legend boyfriend (DiMarco), Benny and Carmen juggle horrible hookups, flavored vodka, and fake IDs. Deeply funny and personal, the show explores the lengths to which we all overcompensate while on the path to finding out who we really are.
The series is created, written, and executive-produced by Skinner. Scott King is the showrunner and also executive produces. Jonah Hill, Matt Dines, and Ali Goodwin executive produce for Strong Baby. Josh Bachove and Daniel Gray Longino executive produce along with Charli XCX, who is also the executive music producer.
The initial cast for the long-awaited Love Island Games Season 2 on Peacock has been announced.
The Love Island franchise spinoff on Peacock will bring single alums from around the globe together, and the first round includes stars from the United Kingdom, the United States, France, Malta, Belgium and the Netherlands.
Ariana Madix takes over hosting duties from Maya Jama for this season, while Maura Higgins returns weekly to host Love Island Aftersun for the season, with Cely Vazquez as social media ambassador. Iain Stirling returns as narrator.

Set in Fiji, Peacock’s Love Island Games brings together fan-favorite Islanders from various Love Island series across the globe – USA, UK and beyond – for a second shot at love. They will compete in a brand-new format to be crowned champions of Love Island Games. In this cheeky iteration, romance will meet reality as the Islanders are faced with both team and couples’ challenges, all while navigating dating, eliminations, recoupling, dramatic arrivals, and new competition twists and turns that help control the game like never before. Ariana Madix will host the new Original series alongside UK comedian Iain Stirling, who reprises his role as narrator.

The new season will also have a format change. As Peacock notes, “viewers will be able to watch their favorite international Islanders in real time, similar to Love Island USA. This means they will also be able to vote for their favorite couples via the Love Island USA app to determine which Islanders will recouple, who will remain in the villa, and who goes home heartbroken.”
When does ‘Love Island Games’ Season 2 premiere?
The season’s two-hour premiere is Sept. 16. Episodes air every day for premiere week, and after that, episodes will air Thursdays through Tuesdays
