Coco Gauff secured another impressive win against Iga Swiatek at the United Cup in Sydney on Sunday. The 20-year-old American defeated the Polish player 6-4, 6-4, helping the U.S. clinch the tournament title. This marks the team’s second win in the event’s three-year history.
Swiatek Struggles Against Gauff
Swiatek, currently ranked as the world’s No. 2 player, took a timeout during the second set to strap her left thigh. After the match, she left the court in tears, according to the BBC.
“Today I think I played great tennis, and I’m happy to get a point for my team on the board,” Gauff said. “It was tough today. I’m not gonna lie.”
Gauff’s victory continues a recent trend of overcoming Swiatek, a player she had lost to in 11 of their first 12 matchups. Gauff first defeated the Polish star in November during the WTA Finals in Riyadh, as reported by The Guardian.
“I have the belief that I’m one of the best players in the world. When I play good tennis, I’m hard to beat,” Gauff said confidently.
Gauff’s Stellar Performance in Sydney
Gauff has not lost a singles match since her defeat to Aryna Sabalenka in the Wuhan semifinals in October. At the United Cup, she remained undefeated in six singles and doubles matches, showcasing her consistency and dominance.
Looking Ahead to the Australian Open
Next, Gauff is set to compete in the 2025 Australian Open, which begins in Melbourne on Jan. 12. Fans will be eager to see if her current form continues on one of tennis’s biggest stages.
