‘Girls5eva’ Canceled (Again) After Season 3 Move To Netflix

Girls5eva, which had found a new home at Netflix after its cancellation at Peacock, has unfortunately graced the stage for the last time. Again.

Variety reports that the musical comedy has been let go by the streamer after a third season overall–its first season on Netflix. The series, which focused on a formerly popular girl group coming back together for one last hurrah, combined Broadway and sitcom talents with the cast of Renée Elise Goldsberry, Sara Bareilles, Busy Phillips and Paula Pell.

Phillips confirmed the cancellation on her podcast, Doing Her Best, saying, “It’s dead. Yeah, I’m just saying it because f— it. If Netflix won’t, I will.”

“I guess not enough people watched it or watched it the way it counts or I don’t know. I actually just don’t know,” she continued, adding how Netflix didn’t say how the deal between itself and Peacock was structured. She also said Netflix itself hasn’t confirmed Girls5eva is officially over.

“I don’t think it’ll ever be dead-dead,” she said. “The characters are too good. I’ve even joked with the cast, like, we should do Radio City or turn it into a live stage show–a musical, maybe even Broadway someday.”

In the age of streaming services, Phillips is right to say that nothing’s ever actually dead–all there needs to be is time for execs to want to revisit an idea. But with the series going from one streaming service to another, it’s at least closing curtain time for Girls5eva for now.
