The tandem of Angelo Dawkins and Montez Ford comprises the two-time WWE Tag-Team Champion, Street Profits. At almost six years on the main roster, the Street Profits have had some of the most exciting matches within that span. They always get amazing crowd reactions, too. But somehow, we as fans still don’t believe the team has been able to explore enough of its dimensions. Even though they’ve represented the tag-team division as champions on several occasions, we still don’t believe that they’ve been able to fully reach their potential.
With the type of business that pro-wrestling is, your lack of progress in the art form isn’t always your doing. Stories and situations have to be written for you in a way that you can make the most of it. In fact, the Street Profits have made the most of what they have been given. But more often than not, when they have been able to explore other avenues as characters, they’ve hit brick walls in the process.
Not too long ago, All Elite Wrestling (AEW) wrestler Bobby Lashley was with the WWE, and he had a stable that he was building. Part of that stable was the Street Profits; they seemed to be hitting a corner where they took on a more aggressive presentation. They started working as heels, and it seemed to be a change that was a long time coming. With Lashley’s exodus to rival AEW, it left Dawkins and Ford floundering. It seemed once again that they were in creative purgatory.
The duo forged on with a bit more of a focus, but clearly, they were fan favorites again. So, in as much as we were enjoying them as fans, we also knew that this felt like “same ole” stuff. This was the case up until recently. The Street Profits had yet another shot at regaining the tag-team titles at WWE’s Clash In Paris last weekend, but fell short. Prior to the match and after, Montez Ford seemed to be very stoic and not fond of how the team was performing.
This disposition definitely hints to some changes coming for these two superstars. For some years now, many have been clamoring for Ford to go solo à la Shawn Michaels from The Rockers. From the looks of it, this trigger could be pulled soon.
If you ask me, it’s probably time. Both wrestlers could use a fresh coat of paint, but it’s imperative that with this potential shift, their paths as characters have a clear path. No longer should they be so start-and-stop with their booking. Both fellas have a ton of charisma, so it won’t take much in the ring for us fans to buy into anything. But as with most things in life, just do us a favor, and make it make sense.
Team breakups in pro-wrestling are pretty much an inevitability, but their reunions are as well. The better the breakup, the better the reunion. As we go along for this ride, I just hope it’s all worth it.
