The annual NFL championship game is a highly anticipated event that rounds up sports and music fans alike in some of the biggest entertainment centers in the country. More commonly referred to as Super Bowl Sunday, it’s a presentation of the best in football and in entertainment. While plenty of viewers tune in for the iconic commercials that go viral each year, the Halftime show performer is always a big deal. In recent years, Usher, Rihanna and The Weeknd have headlined the show and set the standard as some of the most successful entertainers out there. Black musicians have rightfully dominated the stage as of late, and 2025 will be no different. Grammy winning rapper Kendrick Lamar was announced as the Super Bowl Halftime show headliner in September; since then everyone has been feeling the hype. Here is what we know about what the Compton native has planned so far.
This year’s Super Bowl will be hosted on Feb. 9 by one of the country’s most popular and culture-filled cities, New Orleans. NOLA is already known for its music, cuisine and famous festival, Mardi Gras. As a city rich in history and steeped in celebratory energy, it is the perfect place for the NFL to carry out their championship game. For the eighth time, the Caesars Superdome will host the event; spanning over 70 acres, the venue can hold over 75,000 fans and will certainly provide a great stage for Lamar.
Outside of professional sports, the father of two announced his North American tour that starts in April 2025. The Grand National Tour is already incredibly popular following his global showcase of Mr. Morale & The Big Steppers, but his Super Bowl performance is sure to be a powerful preview of what fans should expect during the upcoming concerts.
An ad for the halftime show was recently released by Apple Music, which is the sponsor for the show, and its got fans buzzing with excitement. Along with a teaser of Lamar saying, “You know this field a lot bigger than people think,” the trailer features the familiar face of an artist who will accompany the “King Kunta” artist on the Super Bowl stage – SZA. At this point it is unclear what exactly these two plan to deliver, but the surprise is half the fun of watching the Halftime show. Fans can assume that, based on both Lamar and his frequent collaborator’s stage presence and musical sound, they’re in for an unforgettable break from all the action on the field.
This performance won’t be the first (nor likely the last) time these two performers join forces. To get ready for this iconic duo, it’s best to get familiar with their musical collaborations and individual hits. One of K-Dot’s most popular songs right now is actually with SZA from his reccently released GNX album, on which SZA appears twice. The first track she contributes to is “luther,” along with “gloria.” These lyrical masterpieces will likely be performed, along with their joint track from the Black Panther soundtrack, “All the Stars.”
Additionally, Kendrick Lamar’s “Not Like Us” has been making waves since his feud with Drake took over the news cycle, so this jam is pretty much guaranteed to be performed. Other hits from his DAMN, Mr. Morale, To Pimp a Butterfly and good kid, m.A.A.d city albums are likely to be featured in the Halftime show performance as well. Fans can stream his music on major platforms like Apple Music, Spotify and SoundCloud while they eagerly await Super Bowl Sunday.
