Mason Gooding has closed a deal to return to Scream 7.
Variety broke the news, noting that he is set to reprise his role from Scream and Scream 6 as Chad Meeks-Martin. The trade publications notes that Jasmin Savoy Brown, who plays Chad’s sister Mindy, has not officially joined yet.
Gooding is the first legacy star aside from Neve Campbell to join the pic after an overhaul and cast changes after Spyglass Media Group ousted Melissa Barrera from her lead role of Sam Carpenter after her comments in support of Palestine.
Jenna Ortega also is not returning as Sam Carpenter, attributed to scheduling conflicts. This makes Gooding the only member of the ‘Core Four’ (referring the new primary actors in the franchise beginning with 2022’s Scream aka Scream 5) set to return so far, with Brown unconfirmed and Barrera and Ortega not returning.
Christopher Landon, who was set to direct the film, also parted ways with the project.
As Variety reported, Gooding told them back in March that he believed Scream 7 would still happen despite the behind-the-scenes news.
“If it could make money, I guarantee, they’re making it,” he said. “It’s all about keeping up with what feels like is the best movie for the fans. ‘Scream’ doesn’t exist without the people who enjoy is as much as they do. … If people want it, they will certainly try their best to see it happen.”
Soon, original star Neve Campbell joined the seventh film, with new stars Celeste O’Connor, Asa Germann, Mckenna Grace, and Sam Rechner also joining.
Gooding can be seen soon in Sony’s Heart Eyes early next year, and has a role in A24’s Y2K, which is out now.
Scream 7‘s current release date is Feb. 27, 2026.
