Zoë Kravitz On Playing An Atypical Girlfriend To Austin Butler’s Hank In ‘Caught Stealing’

Zoë Kravitz’s character in Darren Aronofsky’s Caught Stealing, Yvonne, is more than just a mere love interest. Instead, Yvonne gave Kravitz the “interesting” challenge of portraying an EMT, as she told Blavity/Shadow and Act Managing Editor, Trey Mangum.

“ I feel like on the human level, the fact that she’s an EMT was really interesting to me,” she told us. “You know, someone that dedicates their life to taking care of other people and someone that stays calm in chaotic situations,” she said, adding that Austin Butler’s character Hank is probably attracted to Yvonne because of her coolness under pressure.

Why Yvonne is ‘this thing that calms’ Hank

“I think he is kind of [in chaos], you know, and she’s kind of this thing that calms him,” she said. “I think is also obviously attracted to that. And I think also the thing that makes her more than just a love interest is that it’s not just about what she can do for him, but what he can do for her. You know, she’s really questioning and looking at what kind of partner are you? What kind of man are you? You know, and seeing if that is something that she wants. It’s always nice when you get to play a character that goes beyond just ‘girlfriend.’”

Filming this New York City-set story

She also described what it was like filming a story set in New York City. For her, she said there was “an openness.”

“The movie is, in some ways, like this metaphor for the crazy city and this person that comes from another place and gets his ass kicked by the city in the craziest way,” she said, adding how the film shows how so many different kinds of people live and work in the city’s neighborhoods.

“There’s this kind of bigger picture-metaphor-thing happening,” she said, regarding Hank’s personal story and the city’s overall feel.
