At least four shops were burned down on Friday when fire broke out at a popular holiday market in New York City’s Bryant Park. The fire broke out at Bryant Park Winter Village around 9 a.m. and burned multiple shops, but nobody was injured as firefighters quickly put out the flames, the Associated Press reported. The fire also damaged the roof of a nearby ice skating rink.
The fire was caused by an overheated fryer and it has been determined to be accidental, ABC 7 reported. After the fire broke out at Seapark booth, a seafood restaurant, the flames spread to other shops. Two other eateries, Down the Chimney and 4X4 Burger, were among the damaged shops.
Bryant Park Winter Village, which continues until Jan. 5, typically opens to the public at 11 a.m. However, it appears that the market was open earlier on Friday. The busy open-air holiday market attracts dozens of tourists who come from all over the world to check out hundreds of vendors and food shops in the area.
“We are grateful for the FDNY’s quick response to the incident that occurred earlier today,” a Bryant Park spokesperson for said, per ABC 7. “The Rink and The Lodge are currently open. Most of The Holiday Shops have reopened, and we expect all the Holiday Shops that were not affected by the fire to reopen later today.”
Two weeks ago, eighteen stalls were damaged when a fire broke out at another Manhattan holiday market in Herald Square. Officials determined that the fire in the incident was caused by electrical damage.
