No, Calvin Harris isn’t going to release his previously teased collaboration with Miley Cyrus — but that doesn’t mean he’s on the outs with the pop star, despite a few comments he made that some fans interpreted as shade against her.
More than a year after he first shared a snippet of an ocean-themed EDM song featuring Cyrus’ vocals, the DJ has caused a stir online by sharing a new teaser for the same project in a recent TikTok, this time with Jessie Reyez singing on the track. At first not addressing the three-time Grammy winner’s absence, Harris simply captioned the post, “Yes I love it #newmusic #ocean.”
Fans, however, were immediately confused. It wasn’t long before his comment section filled up with questions about where the version with the “Flowers” singer had gone — and some of his replies to those queries quickly led some viewers to believe that there must be bad blood between the two artists that had caused the song’s release to be blocked.
“Awwwwww where’s Miley!!!!!” one person wrote, to which Harris replied, “I do not know.”
“I like this better than the Miley version,” another fan commented, with the electronic hitmaker agreeing, “And it is !!!”
“We only want Miley,” a third person wrote, to which Harris responded, “Off you pop then.”
But, fear not. As followers clamored for answers, Harris eventually clarified that he doesn’t have anything against Cyrus. When someone questioned why he was directing “hate” at the Hannah Montana alum, he corrected, “I love Miley,” later writing that the vocalist has “an amazing voice.”
“It was my bad … crossed wires,” he also responded to someone asking whether it had been Cyrus’ “fault” that the collab had been shelved.
To another fan who asked if there was “any issue between” Harris and Cyrus, he answered, “Absolutely not!!”
The debacle comes just a few months after Harris dropped new single “Blessings” with Clementine Douglas, which followed March’s solo release “Smoke the Pain Away.” Though he hasn’t yet shared when the Reyez-assisted ocean song will drop, Harris appears to finally be gearing up to release it after first sharing a portion of Cyrus’ abandoned version in May 2024.
“We were dancing, we were wild in the ocean,” Cyrus sang at the time over the uptempo club-ready beat. “When the crowd is all around me, you’re still all I see.”
In the comments of his new TikTok teasing the piece, Harris also explained that Reyez — despite Cyrus’ previous involvement — has always been a part of the upcoming song. Noting that the Canadian singer-songwriter had penned its lyrics, the DJ responded to one fan who’d asked, “Wasn’t this one the one with Miley Cyrus?” by writing, “Kind of but it was with Jessie first.”
He also emphasized that Cyrus’ version will likely never see the light of day. To one person who questioned if there was “any chance Miley’s version could still be released,” Harris wrote frankly, “I’m afraid not.”
And to another fan who implored, “Please release it with Miley’s vocals,” the producer said, “Not possible.”
