Tisha Campbell and Tichina Arnold Are Real-Life Sharane and Sidney

While viewers see onscreen friends all the time and wonder if they get along in real life, Tichina Arnold and Campbell went out of their way to audition for their Martin roles separately and hide the fact that they were already close friends. No knock to fitness guru A.J. Johnson, but Arnold is Campbell’s real-life Sharane from House Party. The duo, who have been friends since they were 12 years old, have shown their chemistry as friends, as dancers and even as singers, including their 1997 soundtrack remake of “Don’t Ask My Neighbor” from the movie Sprung. They’ve gone on to collaborate for a number of other jobs, including co-stars in Little Shop of Horrors, Martin, Everybody Hates Chris, Everybody Still Hates Chris and hosting multiple Soul Train Awards.

From ‘School Daze’ to a Self-Titled Album

While Campbell is far more famous for her acting roles than her singing career, she has made a point of sending a friendly reminder to fans that she can do both equally well. In School Daze, she performed “Be Alone Tonight.” On her self-titled album Tisha came “Push,” “Love Me Down” and the collaboration with Arnold. She’s also had singles as recently as 2019, including a Rich the Kid collaboration called “I Don’t Wanna Be Alone.”

Overcoming Health and Relationship Obstacles Has Not Stopped Campbell’s Grind

Campbell’s career hasn’t always been smooth sailing, but her obstacles had nothing to do with auditions, scripts or travel. In one of two obstacles, she ended her marriage to fellow actor Duane Martin. The two married in August of 1996, and five years later, she realized something was wrong shortly after the birth of their first son Xen. Describing a then-undiagnosed health issue as feeling like there was “an elephant on my chest,” she wrote it off as pneumonia. But after seeing lesions on her neck and arms, a biopsy confirmed she had Stage 1 sarcoidosis, a condition in which granulomas are present in the lymph nodes. By this time, she’d already completed 132 episodes of Martin from 1992 to 1997 and had only been working a year (in a total of 123 episodes) as Janet on My Wife and Kids from 2000 to 2005.

While steroids were used as treatment for the lung disease, this was physically affecting her appearance in an industry that’s all about looks. (Comedian Bernie Mac also had sarcoidosis, but he was at stage 4.) For four years, she was powering her way through and still trying to keep her acting career in tact. However, after her divorce from Martin in 2018 (and the same year she played Nellie Biles in The Simone Biles Story: Courage to Soar), she’s confirmed that medical professionals “can’t find it at the base of my brain at all. I haven’t gotten sick not one time.” She credits her healthier diagnosis with parting ways from her now-ex husband after accusing Martin of emotional, physical and mental abuse.

Even with health scares, now a divorcee and being a working mother in Hollywood, she powered through the COVID-19 pandemic with roles in Outmatched, Uncoupled, Craig of the Creek and Inside Job. Rayful Edmond III, a drug lord best known for catalyzing a crack cocaine epidemic in Washington, D.C. in the 1980s, has died. He was 60.

According to The New York Times, Edmond’s death was confirmed by Kristie Breshears, a spokeswoman for the Federal Bureau of Prisons. Per the Bureau, Edmond had been living at a halfway house in Miami at the time of his death.

Rayful Edmond’s work in the drug game

Edmond is known as one of the most prolific drug lords in Washington D.C. in the 1980s, earning the nickname the “king of cocaine” in the area, Time reported. He spearheaded a expansive drug empire that contributed significantly to the crack epidemic in D.C., which, in turn, saw a rise in homicides in the city. Edmond’s operation was impenetrable (the 150-member drug ring was protected by guards armed with Uzi submachine guns, The New York Times reported) and lead to at least 30 murders. Those attacks were not linked to Edmond.

It took authorities until 1989 to arrest a 24-year-old Edmond, who was later sentenced to life in prison for running his drug empire, which was estimated to distribute up to 1,700 pounds of cocaine per month and millions of dollars each week. Edmond’s income matched his lifestyle— he was well known in D.C. for living a glamorous lifestyle, including sponsoring local basketball tournaments and traveling to Las Vegas often for acclaimed boxing matches.

Edmond believed he and others shouldn’t have been found guilty

“I think that me and my family and my friends all should have been found not guilty,” Edmond told The Washington Post (as the New York Times reported) after his conviction. “All of us are loving, caring people who have kids. We’re just like everyone else in Washington, D.C.”

But prison didn’t stop Edmond’s operation. Edmond’s influence pushed the Justice Department to create a task force to put a stop to drug trafficking in prisons. In 1996, Edmond pleaded guilty to leading deals between D.C. dealers and Colombian drug cartels from a Pennsylvania prison. And in 1997, the Deputy Attorney General at the time, Eric Holder, said on 60 Minutes that he pushed more cocaine while in prison than when he was out. According to Time, he received an additional 30-year sentence.

Later, Edmond became an informant for authorities. He was a government witness in several cases that helped convict other cocaine traffickers, and he played pivotal roles in covert sting operations. Edmond also provided the government with information on the murder of two inmates in a Pennsylvania prison.

According to The New York Times, information on his survivors has not been shared.
