The armed forces women recognized as the “Six Triple Eight” were honored with the Congressional Gold Medal for their groundbreaking work during World War II on Tuesday.
In 1945, the 6888th Central Postal Directory Battalion, led by Lt. Col. Charity Adams Earley, was the sole all-Black women’s military unit deployed to Europe during World War II. This extraordinary collective created an operations process that solved the severe postal disruption in Europe during the battle. In only three months, they cleared 17 million pieces of mail, finishing the job at twice the speed projected initially. Their innovative locator card system ensured service members received their correspondence without delay.

Hollywood and Congress shine a long-overdue spotlight on the Six Triple Eight
Last December, the Tyler Perry-written and directed film, The Six Triple Eight, was released on Netflix, bringing more awareness to the women’s impact and historic contribution to the armed forces. Two years before the movie, the U.S. Congress voted 422-0 to present the 6888th with the most distinguished recognition, the Congressional Gold Medal, ABC News reported.

Wisconsin Rep. Gwen Moore, who co-sponsored the bill, emphasized the importance of finally honoring the courageous women of the 6888th.
“These heroes deserve their dues; and I am so glad their story is being told,” Moore, a Democrat, told The Associated Press on April 28. “I am especially honored to ensure my constituent Ms. Anna Mae Robertson and the many others who served with her, are recognized for their selfless service.”
Inactive Maj. Fannie Griffin McClendon admitted she couldn’t believe the voting results.
“It’s overwhelming,” she added. “It’s something I never even thought about it.”
Following the military’s integration, McClendon joined the Air Force and blazed a trail, becoming the first woman to command an all-male squadron under the Strategic Air Command before retiring in 1971.
“They kept hollering about wanting us to go overseas so I guess they found something for us to do overseas: Take care of the mail,” McClendon said. “And there was an awful lot of mail. … They expected we were gonna be there about two or three months trying to get it straightened out. Well I think in about a month, in a month and a half, we had it all straightened out and going in the right direction.”

An honor decades in the making
Kim Guise of the National WWII Museum noted that just two women from the original 855-member unit are still alive today.
“That really shows how long this recognition took,” she told ABC News about the unit officially being recognized. “It is really important to recognize the accomplishments of these women and what they went through to serve their country in war time.”
House Speaker Mike Johnson joined others in a commemorative event at Emancipation Hall in the Capitol Visitor Center to celebrate Lt. Col. Charity Adams Earley’s legacy by presenting her family with the honorary medal.
The parents of an 11-year-old who died by suicide have filed a lawsuit against the school district two years after his death. They allege his teacher was bullying him and told other students to join in on the bullying.
Louis Johnson III, also known as LJ, died by suicide on April 27, 2023 at 11-years-old. His parents, Tyka Johnson and Louis Johnson Jr., filed a wrongful death lawsuit against the Marion County School Board in Ocala, FL, last week, according to People.
After his death, they distributed flyers at the school for suicide prevention. At the time, the flyers included allegations that Donna White, their son’s fifth-grade teacher, contributed to bullying. The teacher’s contract was not renewed after 24 students said she would often make students cry in the classroom during an investigation conducted in 2023.

They said that White “constantly, consistently and relentlessly publicly humiliated minor child [LJ] in front of his peers, calling him ‘stupid’ and ridiculing him in front of his classmates on several occasions over the span of months,” according to the lawsuit. They are also alleging that she would “recruit other students to ridicule” LJ and tell them to agree with comments that he was “stupid” and “didn’t know anything.”

His parents are asking for a jury trial
The parents added that they reported these incidents to the school board but negligence led to their son’s suicide; they’re also asking for a trial by jury.
After his death, LJ’s family created a GoFundMe page to help cover expenses.
“LJ was the youngest of four and so full of potential and promise. He loved the beach, catching crabs, making TikTok recipes and was a huge advocate for the homeless. If he saw a homeless person, he immediately said ‘dad, we gotta pray for that person,’” the page reads. “Since moving to Florida, LJ battled with bullying. He gave up his fight and took his own life.”

She reflected on her upbringing outside of the limelight, as well as the inspiration she hopes to provide to others by sharing her experience as a trans woman.
On March 19, Airyn was photographed by paparazzi with long pink locs and tabloids announced her identity as a trans woman. The 29-year-old was not in control of how the news broke and even noticed inconsistencies in the information The Daily Mail and other outlets were sharing.

“They just sort of reminded me that people really don’t know anything about me,” she told Them.
“There’s a difference between being visible and being seen,” Airyn added. “I’ve been visible. I don’t think I’ve been seen yet.”

She sees herself as a “late bloomer” and often felt different than her peers growing up. Airyn said she felt like she “stood out like a sore thumb” because she was “a bigger-bodied person” in a “relatively thin or fit” family.
Although her parents were accepting of her queerness, social beauty standards still had affected her.
“I was always told I was too much of something or not enough of something growing up: Too big, not skinny enough. Not Black enough, not white enough. Too feminine, not masculine enough,” Airyn said. “It was never just, ‘You’re just right, just the way you are.’”
“Obviously no parent is perfect, but I am grateful that both my parents agreed to keep me out of the limelight,” Airyn added. “They have told me they wanted me to have as much of a normal childhood as possible.”
Airyn De Niro was inspired by famous Black LGBTQ+ women
She started hormone therapy in November 2024 and said she found inspiration in Black women like Laverne Cox and Raven-Symoné.
“I’d want to hopefully be an inspiration for at least one other person like me who is Black, who is queer, who’s not a size extra small,” she said. “I’d want to see more trans women, more Black women who are maybe bigger-bodied or don’t fit the mold of super thin or heroin chic.”
Airyn’s studies as a mental health counselor are a testimony to her dedication and commitment to advocacy.
“People of color and queer people definitely need more mental health advocacy and support,” she said. “So I’m hoping I’m able to do that.”
Airyn is one of De Niro’s seven children. He shares Airyn and her twin brother Julian with the actress Toukie Smith.
President Donald Trump is doubling down on his claims that Kilmar Abrego Garcia, who was mistakenly deported to El Salvador despite court orders, is affiliated with the MS13 gang. He shared a photograph of the man’s hand tattoos online, but experts say it appears to have been digitally altered. Others point that tattoos do not constitute proof of gang affiliation.
In late March, Abrego Garcia was deported to CECOT, a mega-prison in El Salvador. As Blavity reported, he moved to the U.S. to flee gang violence and had been living in Maryland under legal status with his American wife and their child.
Although the Trump administration admitted to his deportation as an “administrative error,” the president has made repeated claims that Abrego Garcia is a member of the MS13 gang. He has also refused to bring him back to the U.S. despite an unanimous Supreme Court order.

Trump shared a photograph of Abrego Garcia’s tattooed knuckles on his Truth Social platform on April 18. His hand allegedly includes a tattoo on each finger, including a marijuana leaf, a smiley face with the letter X for eyes, a cross and a skull. The photograph also shows the letters “M”, “S”, “1”, and a “3” above each tattoo in small printed typeface.
“That was photoshopped,” Terry Moran of ABC News told Trump during an April 29 interview, according to Al Jazeera.
“Terry, do you want me to show you the picture?” Trump insisted. “He had M, S as clear as you can be. Not interpreted.”
Trump added that Abrego Garcia’s tattoos were used as evidence to deport him.
Are Kilmar Abrego Garcia’s alleged MS13 tattoos real?
The MS13 tattoos do not appear on recent photographs of Abrego Garcia, including a family photograph shared by immigration advocates, as well as one shared by Salvadoran government officials on April 17, according to Al Jazeera.
Some experts have cast doubt as to whether the tattoos are real and if the photograph shared by Trump was digitally altered.

Abrego Garcia has no record of being involved in a gang. His alleged MS13 tattoos are also not used by current gang members, according to Maya Barak, an associate professor of criminal justice studies at the University of Michigan-Dearborn, as well as insiders.
“As with other gang subcultures in the U.S., MS-13 gang culture has been somewhat commodified and become part of popular culture,” she told CBS News.
Symbols and tattoos are “notoriously difficult to interpret,” Roberto Lovato, an assistant professor at the University of Nevada, Las Vegas, added.
