Serena Williams is denying claims that she’s bleached her skin. The tennis star recently posted a video clip of herself sitting on her husband Alexis Ohanian‘s lap. The video caused some folks online to speculate that she has been bleaching her skin.
While showing how she applies concealer during a recent Instagram Live, Williams took a moment to address the allegations. She explained how her skin looked different because she volunteered to be involved in her daughter’s stage play, which required her to wear heavy theater makeup.
“For you haters out there, I do not bleach my skin. There is a thing called sunlight and in that sunlight, you get different colors,” Williams said. “Yes, I’m calling you out on this because it is ridiculous that everyone’s like, ‘Oh, she bleached her skin.’”
She continued, “I’m a dark Black woman and I love who I am and I love how I look, and that’s just not my thing. And if people do it, that’s their thing and they have every opportunity and they should. I don’t judge, but you guys do. But that’s what this world is about and I stay in my lane — the non-judgy one, and I keep it, but no, I actually don’t bleach my skin. So, can we just like kind of clear that up?”
This past July, Williams graced the cover of Harper’s BAZAAR. In a behind-the-scenes interview, she opened up about finding confidence despite the constant criticism she faces as someone who’s been in the public eye since before her 18th birthday.
“I use positive affirmations and I try to believe in myself and then, I take things one stage at a time,” the mother of two said.
“I love my body; I had to learn to love it. And I absolutely love who I am now, and I love my figure, and I love everything about me,” Williams added. “If you do that, people will love who you are as well.”
