A Richmond, Virginia, couple was shocked when a Starbucks employee turned them away during a life-threatening health scare.

According to WLBT, Kevin and Nelisa Key had date night plans to see a comedy show on March 30. Before the show, Kevin, who is in Stage 4 kidney failure, began to feel uneasy and alerted his wife.

“He just started sweating. He’s like, ‘I don’t feel well,’” Nelisa said. “He started leaning over, and then he started vomiting.”

A man requested a cup of water at Starbucks during a medical emergency

Since this wasn’t the pair’s first experience having an episode like this, Nelisa knew what to do. She noticed a Starbucks nearby, rushed in and notified the customers in line that her husband was having a medical emergency and needed some water. Patrons waiting to order were empathetic and allowed her to skip to the front of the line. When she told the barista the situation, they denied her service, telling her to wait in line like everyone else.

“I pointed back, because you could see Kevin, and I was like, ‘That’s my husband right there. He’s in Stage 4 kidney failure. I just need water fast for him.’ And the employee looked at me and was like, ‘You need to get in line,’” Nelisa told WLBT about the interaction. “And then I repeated what I said, I’m like, ‘But my husband, he’s in kidney failure, we just need ice water quickly.’ And he looked at me again and was like, ‘You need to get in line.”

She then noticed a Capital One Café, so she ran inside and was immediately offered assistance and given a cup of water.

“First and foremost, we’re glad the person facing a medical emergency is doing much better,” Jennifer Windbeck, head of retail bank channels & operations at Capital One, said in an exclusive statement to WLBT. “We’re proud of the way our Capital One Café Ambassadors handle themselves each and every day. ‘Doing the right thing’ is one of our Capital One values and we believe that shows up in the work we do day in and day out.”

Shocked by how the worker at the coffee chain handled the matter, Kevin illustrated the severity of the situation and how it could have turned deadly.

“I could have possibly blacked out,” Kevin said. “It could have had a more dramatic impact on my body. My kidneys could have possibly shut down.”

How is Starbucks addressing what happened?

Starbucks’ media relations spokesperson, Sam Jefferies, sent WLBT a statement to reveal the actions the company has taken after learning of the incident and to express the company’s sentiments toward the Keys.

“We’ve been in touch with this customer over the past few weeks to listen, apologize, and make this right, and we hope to welcome them back to a store of their choice to give them the Starbucks experience they should expect…” Jefferies said on behalf of the company.

“As we continue to train our partners on the new Code of Conduct,” the statement continued, “we are working to ensure that everyone who visits our store has a great experience and training partners to communicate openly and from a place of kindness, compassion, and consideration for other patrons when determining how to proceed when a guest makes a request outside of our policies. If a customer communicates a request related to restroom access or water due to a medical, health or accessibility issue, we are committed to providing appropriate accommodations.”

Investigators believe they may have found the body of 3-year-old Nola Dinkins, who was reported missing on Tuesday in Delaware.

According to NBC Philadelphia, the body was found on Wednesday in Cecil County, Maryland, but investigators haven’t yet confirmed the identity. However, her mother, Darrian Randle, 31, has “first- and second-degree murder, first-degree of child abuse resulting in death of a minor under thirteen, and other related criminal charges in Maryland, according to state police,” per 6 ABC.

Cedrick Britten, said to be Randle’s boyfriend, is charged with “accessory to first- and second-degree murder after the fact, failure to report child death, and other offenses,” as 6 ABC reported.

“Our homicide unit investigators had enough information gleaned through the investigation that connected these two individuals with the disappearance of this 3-year-old,” said Elena Russo, a spokesperson for the Maryland State Police.

Darrian Randle initially her 3-year-old daughter was abducted at gunpoint

The search for Dinkins began on Tuesday night after Randle told police that a couple held her at gunpoint and abducted the child on the side of the road in Newark, Delaware. According to investigators, Randle said the man approached her after she stopped her car to talk to her daughter.

Police said the suspect was initially described as a bald white man, about 40 years old, who has a bald peach fuzz on his head. Officers believed that he may be wearing a black hoodie with gray basketball shorts, and he may have a handgun. Police also said Randle told them that the man was traveling with a blonde white woman. When officers released the Amber Alert on Tuesday night, the report stated that the man was driving a dark-colored SUV, possibly a Ford or Chevy.

However, the Amber Alert was canceled on Wednesday after officers said the mother is lying.

“Detectives determined that the initial account of the incident given by the mother was false,” Andrea Botterbusch of the New Castle County Police Department said, per NBC Philadelphia.

The department has now launched a homicide investigation, but charges haven’t been filed at this point and there are no suspects identified. Randle is held in custody during the investigation.

Ananda Lewis, the popular TV personality who hosted MTV‘s Total Request Live and Hot Zone, has died at age 52. Lewis’ sister, Lakshmi, confirmed the sad news in a Facebook post on Wednesday.

“She’s free, and in His heavenly arms,” Lakshmi wrote. “Lord, rest her soul.”

In 2020, Ananda Lewis was diagnosed with stage 3 breast cancer

Although her cause of death hasn’t been confirmed, Lewis was very open about her breast cancer battle in recent years, People reported. In an 2020 Instagram post, Lewis shard that she was diagnosed with stage 3 breast cancer. She told her followers that she avoided getting regular mammograms because she fears radiation.

“This is tough for me, but if just ONE woman decides to get her mammogram after watching this, what I’m going through will be worth it.🌸PRACTICE EARLY DETECTION🌸Share this with a woman you love. These 6 minutes could help save her life,” Lewis wrote at the time.

During a roundtable discussion in 2024 with CNN’s Stephanie Elam and Sara Sidner, Lewis said she chose not to get a double mastectomy after she was diagnosed and shared that her tumor later metastasized while the cancer progressed to stage 4.

“My plan at first was to get out excessive toxins in my body. I felt like my body is intelligent, I know that to be true,” Lewis told Elam and Sidner, according to People. “Our bodies are brilliantly made. I decided to keep my tumor and try to work it out of my body a different way. . . . I wish I could go back. It’s important for me to admit where I went wrong with this.”

Ananda Lewis was known as ‘the hip-hop generation’s reigning It Girl’

Lewis rose to fame in the ’90s as a host for MTV’s Total Request Live and Hot Zone. Throughout her time on MTV, Lewis interviewed everyone from Britney Spears and NSYNC to Brandy and Destiny’s Child. In 1999, she gained recognition from The New York Times.

“If you don’t recognize the name Ananda Lewis, it may be because you’re older than 23, or not a hip-hop star, or not a regular supplicant in the land of the velvet ropes,” Douglas Century of The New York Times wrote. “In the last year, Ms. Lewis has emerged as the hip-hop generation’s reigning ‘It Girl,’ meaning she is not just an MTV personality but a woman whose looks and attitudes have made her perpetually in demand.”

After leaving MTV in 2001, Lewis hosted her own show, The Ananda Lewis Show, which only lasted for one season.

“I wanted a change,” she told Teen People in 2001. “It was a matter of proving to myself that I can do [this].”

Many years later, she opened about the short-lived show in an interview with Shondaland, saying, “I wish I had stopped the people that wanted me to do the [talk] show and said, ‘Not yet, it’s a little too early to do this.’ It was overkill for me.”

“It wasn’t what I felt like I signed up for,” she added.

In January 2025, Lewis penned a heartfelt essay titled “Prevention Is the Cure” for Essence: “We’re not meant to stay here forever. We come to this life, have experiences — and then we go,” she wrote in part. “Being real about that with yourself changes how you choose to live. I don’t want to spend one more minute than I have to suffering unnecessarily. That, for me, is not the quality of life I’m interested in. When it’s time for me to go, I want to be able to look back on my life and say, ‘I did that exactly how I wanted to.’”

Lewis is survived by her 14-year-old son, Langston, whom she had with Harry Smith (the brother of rapper-turned-actor Will Smith).
