A Boston-based private equity firm will pay $947 million for 119 JCPenney stores, marking the latest shift for the retailer since it filed for bankruptcy five years ago.

In a news release, Copper Property CTL Pass Through Trust said it sold 119 JCPenney properties in an all-cash deal to an affiliate of Onyx Partners Ltd. on July 25. 

The properties are leased to JCPenney under a long-term agreement where the company is responsible for rent, maintenance, insurance, and taxes.

Property management companies Newmark and Hilco Real Estate had been marketing the JCPenney properties on behalf of Copper Property, a trust created by the retailer’s lenders after its 2020 bankruptcy, USA Today reported. 

How many JCPenney locations remain?

After the retailer filed for bankruptcy, Copper Property assumed control of around 160 stores and six distribution centers. Meanwhile, Simon Property Group and Brookfield Asset Management took over operations and the remaining locations. JCPenney has closed more than 200 locations nationwide, with around 650 stores remaining. 

In May, Blavity reported that seven JCPenney locations across multiple states closed for good on Memorial Day weekend. According to the company, the move was first announced in February after announcing a “handful” of locations would close. 

“While we do not have plans to significantly reduce our store count, we expect a handful of JCPenney stores to close by mid-year,” the company said in the statement at the time. 

“The decision to close a store is never an easy one, but isolated closures do happen from time to time due to expiring lease agreements, market changes or other factors,” the company added.

JCPenney first went through shifts in company operations and sales due to the lingering effects of the COVID-19 pandemic. Other beloved retail brands have also gone through its own changes, with some resorting to bankruptcy filings.

Leo Williams, the mayor of Durham, North Carolina, isn’t apologizing after facing backlash for referring to the city’s young people as “YNs,” a slang term which stands for “young n***as.” Williams, who is running for re-election, used the word when he was talking about gun violence during a town hall meeting.

“We’re dealing with some YNs out here just doing their own thing, stealing [guns] out of cars and they don’t know how to communicate,” Williams said during the meeting, according to The Raleigh News & Observer.

What is the public reaction to Leo Williams calling young people YNs?

Durham activist Paul Scott is among the people who are disappointed in Williams for the term he used.

“As someone who brags about being a former educator, you know the power of words,” Scott said in a Facebook video, per Yahoo! News. “You know that people would take you calling young Black men breaking into cars YNs, people would take that and run with it. Durham already gets bashed enough.”

Still, some others don’t see a problem with what the mayor said because he is Black: “What? Even black people aren’t allowed to say it now?” one person tweeted.

Mayor Leo Williams has since apologized for using the term ‘YNs’

Williams refused to apologize despite the criticism he’s facing for the remark he made at the town hall meeting.

“It was me responding to an audience in the context in which we were having a conversation,” the mayor said in an interview with The Raleigh News & Observer.

Williams continued to stand firm on his statement as he provided more context to the remarks he made.

“I’m not taking back the context of that conversation, and I’m not going to apologize either,” he said. “My reference is, these youngings on the street are killing each other, something has to be done. I wish people would focus on that, rather than two letters that came out of my mouth.”

The mayor also posted a Facebook video in which he showed remorse for offending the public.

“For the folks that I know and respect who are hurt by how this has materialized into something else, I apologize,” Williams said in the video, per The News & Observer. “I also apologize around the fact that even though the intent was something different, there may be a young person who is taking what they’re seeing and thinking that they’re undervalued, and that is not something that I want.”

A group of bills recently proposed in Congress would address the significant health concerns associated with hair products commonly used by Black women. The bills target chemicals and substances in hair products that have been linked to diseases such as cancer. The move comes as scientists and politicians have come to focus on hair products that Black customers and hairdressers often use.

Banning dangerous chemicals, disclosing health risks, and researching safer options

Four Democratic representatives recently introduced the Safer Beauty Bill Package, a collection of four bills that would restrict and regulate a variety of chemicals commonly found in hair products and cosmetics widely used by Black people. Democratic Reps. Lizzie Fletcher of Texas, Doris Matsui of California, Ayanna Pressley of Massachusetts and Jan Schakowsky of Illinois proposed the four bills on July 17. The Toxic-Free Beauty Act would classify two classes of chemicals, phthalates and formaldehyde-releasing preservatives. It would also ban 18 toxic chemicals that have been banned by the European Union, as well as several U.S. states.

The Cosmetic Supply Chain Transparency Act would require suppliers to cosmetic companies to inform these companies of the ingredients and safety of inputs to their products, while the Cosmetic Hazardous Ingredient Right to Know Act would require public disclosure of potential health concerns relating to ingredients included in hair and cosmetic products. Finally, the Cosmetic Safety Protections for Communities of Color & Salon Workers would fund research on safer chemicals, as well as outreach and education, relating to products used by Black women and salon workers.

Movement to make Black hair and beauty products safer

The proposed legislation builds upon years of research linking ingredients in Black hair and beauty products to cancer, other health issues and legislation seeking to regulate these chemicals. In March, Consumer Reports published a study it conducted on the 10 most popular brands of synthetic hair braiding products, finding that all of them contained cancer-causing chemicals. A separate study of beauty and hair products used by Black and Latina women in the Los Angeles area found that the majority of the products used by women in the sample contained formaldehyde or related chemicals that have been known to cause cancer.

In 2022, Congress granted the FDA authority to regulate hair products, but the agency has made little progress in actually banning or restricting harmful chemicals in these products, even as several states, such as California, have banned a variety of these chemicals.

“It’s time to close the loopholes that allow toxic chemicals in the products we use on our bodies every day,” Schakowsky, who authored or coauthored all four bills in the Safer Beauty Bill Package, said in a statement.

Pressley noted that chemicals that cause “increased incidences of cancer, respiratory issues, and adverse reproductive outcomes” have long been present in products used by Black women and girls.

“This isn’t a coincidence — this is exploitation. Black women, girls, and salon workers should be able to show up everyday as our beautiful, authentic selves, without fear for our health and safety.”

Despite years of scientific knowledge about the dangers of Black hair products and years of political concern, progress in making these products safer has been slow. The Safer Beauty Bills Package may be a significant step forward in protecting Black women and girls and beauty professionals by banning and regulating harmful chemicals used in hair and cosmetic products.

Influencer and inventor Julian Brown’s mother has confirmed her son is safe after he shared a cryptic video on social media earlier this month, proclaiming that he was “under attack” after a groundbreaking invention. 

“I can confirm Julian is safe, but in the best interest of his security, I’m not able to provide any more information,” Nia Brown told The Daily Mail.

Who is Julian Brown?

Brown, a 21-year-old Atlanta resident, is a scientist who gained online recognition over his invention “Plastoline,” a product he claims converts plastic into fuels like gasoline and diesel.

He has amassed more than 1.7 million Instagram followers. He hasn’t been seen or heard from since July 9, when he posted a now-questionable video on his account regarding his safety and well-being. 

“Something is happening, keep me in your prayers please. SCREEN RECORD THIS. I don’t know,” Julian wrote in the post’s caption. 

In the video, he said, “Alright, listen everybody. I can’t go into too much detail, but there is some very, very odd stuff going on. I’m certainly under attack right now in many different ways.”

“I just want everybody to know, so just kind of have your eyes open. I have my eyes open, but there is a lot going on. I’m still working, I’m still building – nothing is going to stop that. But I’m just telling you.”

Julian Brown’s cryptic videos concerned his followers

His mother could not provide additional details about her son or his whereabouts. Additionally, the Atlanta Police Department said there was no investigation into a missing person with the name Julian Brown, according to Newsweek.

However, his earlier posts on Instagram alarmed his followers that he may have been in danger over his invention.

“A SECRET Helicopter found circled me in the middle of NOWHERE… and it gets even scarier – Pray for me please,” Brown wrote in a July 3 post.

‘What motivated me was seeing the large plastic issue at hand throughout the world’

Julian is also the founder of Nature Jab & Innovator of Microwave Pyrolysis, a “patent-pending technology” that “combines the efficiencies of microwave heating with the functionality of a conventional pyrolysis plant,” according to the company’s website. 

He is also a 776 Climate Fellow of the 776 Foundation, which funds young people “who want to build a better future,” according to a May Forbes article. Julian shared his passion for making the world a better place with the magazine and explained how everyone can benefit from cleaner environments. 

“What motivated me was seeing the large plastic issue at hand throughout the world and not seeing any obvious solutions that were effective enough to make a difference,’ Julian told the publication. 

He continued, sharing an incident in High school that changed his outlook on how people view and treat the environment: “It made me so upset that even though we are told that we are recycling, plastic is clearly ending up in the oceans and landfills where it is affecting so many lives, including our own.”

Julian recently received a $100,000 grant from Reddit cofounder Alexis Ohanian. He is seeking additional funding from the government or other sources to expand his work, per Forbes.

“Trump is trying to throw every Black person he can think (of) in front of the scandal to distract us,” Williams said. “First, he released the Martin Luther King Jr. files. Then he accused Obama of treason. And now he wants to prosecute Oprah and Beyoncé?”

Williams also stated that Trump is appearing to single out prominent Black Americans as a diversion from the unfolding controversy: “Who’s next? Michael Jordan? Michael B. Jordan? Michael C. Jordan?” she said. “We’re about a week away from him saying that Urkel did 9/11. Urkel? Did he do that?” She then wondered aloud if she would be next, quipping that recent Emmy nominations might just make her famous enough to be a target.

In a recent social media post, music executive Mack Maine shared that he’s been grieving the loss of his son Isaiah, whose nickname is Zeke, who died nearly two weeks ago. On Monday, Maine, who is the president of Young Money Entertainment, took to Instagram to share the sad news that Zeke died from a seizure. The post included a slideshow of pictures and videos of Maine with Zeke, who was only 20 years old.

Maine shared that Zeke was at his home in California when he experienced a seizure on July 16. He said he learned about the incident via a phone call.

“Been trying to build up the strength to put up this post since last night so bear with me🙏🏾,” he wrote. “On July 16th I received a call that my son Isaiah (Zeke) passed away at his home in California from a seizure. I’m still in shock and still processing the fact that he’s gone. Still confused, still questioning life and why my child and not me. I know I am/was his father while he was here in the flesh but now he’s ascended to rejoin OUR Father God in the spirit and his ancestors who also loved him dearly like his grandfather (my dad) and his grandmother 🕊️🕊️.”

Maine added that his greatest job on earth was being a father to Zeke and how parenthood upped his “motivation” to accomplish his goals.

“Zeke I thank you for granting me with one of the greatest gifts I’ve ever received, Fatherhood! The experience and bond with you and I brought me purpose…,” he said. “YOU were my biggest inspiration and motivation..YOU were the reason I got out of the bed when everyone else snoozed.. Your smile brightened my dark days as you were my SONshine ☀️ Your soul was made of innocence and your heart was pure.” 

Maine noted the one positive aspect about dealing with the loss of his child is how Zeke’s soul is now with his most beloved heavenly angels, which includes his late dad, known as Dip.

“Since July 16th your village has been crushed and we’re hurting,” he said. “This is a pain I’ve personally never felt before but I’m still trusting and believing in God’s plan and God’s will and mercy 🙏🏾You’ll always be my Prince. I need you more than ever now to watch over me from the other side 🕊️ Now you’re reunited with 2 of your favorite souls, Bentley and Dip. 🙏🏾”

While honoring his late son, Maine also shared the fact that July 28 marks his own birthday, as well as the second anniversary of his father’s death.

Nicki Minaj and others share their condolences for Mack Maine’s loss

According to Taste Dive, Maine and Lil Wayne have a friendship that dates back to their pre-teen years in New Orleans. The two met when they were around 11 years old, bonding over their love for music. When Lil Wayne founded Young Money Entertainment in 2005, he tapped Maine as a founding member, who was named president in 2009, The New York Post reported.

Following the sad news of Zeke’s death, many of Maine’s peers shared their condolences in the comment section.

“I don’t even believe what I just read. This can’t be real,” Nicki Minaj wrote. “I love you so much. You guys raised the most incredible young man. He was such a perfect boy. The shooting suspect, Shane Tamura, 27, of Las Vegas, was captured on surveillance footage leaving a double-parked black BMW and walking into an office building at 345 Park Ave. at East 52nd Street just before 6:30 p.m. Monday, NBC News reported.

The building is home to several global firms, including Blackstone, the National Football League, Rudin Management and KPMG.

He sprayed gunfire in the lobby and again on the 33rd floor, striking multiple people on both levels before killing himself, New York Police Commissioner Jessica Tisch said at a Monday evening news conference.

“According to our law enforcement partners in Las Vegas, Mr. Tamura has a documented mental health history,” Tisch said. “His motives are still under investigation.”

Tamura also had a note in his pocket, claiming he suffered from chronic traumatic encephalopathy, a brain disease linked to head trauma from contact sports like football and other areas, where repetitive head injuries can happen, according to Indiana University School of Medicine.

“You can’t go against the NFL, they’ll squash you,” Tamura wrote in the three-page note investigators found at the shooting, according to a source familiar with the matter.

In the third page, Tamura said, “Study my brain please. I’m sorry,” sources said, per ABC 7 New York.

Tamura played football in high school. Those who knew him were shocked to hear that he was the suspected gunman in the mass shooting.

“He was a great teammate. He was a great guy in general. He didn’t cause any problems actually at all in the locker room or on the field,” one of Tamura’s former teammates told KABC Los Angeles. “He was just a guy who really enjoyed the sport, not problematic at all so when I found out the news, I was really shocked, I really couldn’t believe it.”

Later on, New York City Mayor Eric Adams said, “He seemed to have blamed the NFL,” Adams told WPIX-TV, as ESPN reported. “The NFL headquarters was located in the building, and he mistakenly went up the wrong elevator bank.”

Who were the victims in the deadly shooting?

Tamura drove across the country for three days before arriving in New York City on Monday afternoon. Investigators confirmed he registered the car in Las Vegas. Tisch said they found prescribed medication, a rifle case with rounds, ammunition magazines, and a loaded revolver inside the vehicle. 

The slain NYPD officer was 36-year-old Didarul Islam, a Bangladeshi immigrant who worked for the police force for over three years. He had two young sons, and his wife is pregnant with their third child, authorities said, according to CNN.

“Everyone we spoke with stated he was a person of faith and a person that believed in God and believed in living out the life of a godly person,” Adams said of Islam, calling him a hero.

Other victims included a man and a woman who were shot and taken to Bellevue Hospital, where they later died. Another woman was found dead on the 33rd floor, police said, but they’re withholding their names until family notifications occur, the police commissioner noted. 

One of the women killed in the attack was Blackstone employee Wesley LePatner, the company confirmed Tuesday. She leaves behind a husband and children, the firm said in a statement.

According to CBS News, NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell confirmed that a league employee was seriously injured in the shooting and is in stable condition. The organization has not released the person’s name, but they’re recovering with the help of their family.

“We are deeply grateful to the law enforcement officers who responded to this threat quickly and decisively and to Officer Islam, who gave his life to protect others,” Goodell said.

Deion Sanders has undergone surgery to remove his bladder after being diagnosed with cancer. The University of Colorado football coach talked about his health in an emotional press conference on Monday, saying he is now cancer-free after the surgery. Sitting alongside urological oncology director Dr. Janet Kukreja and Colorado team trainer Lauren Askevold, Sanders praised some of his closest supporters, opened up about his journey in recent months, and urged people to get screenings.

Sanders reflects on keeping diagnosis private from family

Sanders said he kept the details of his diagnosis a secret from most people, including his sons Shedeur and Shilo. As his sons prepared for the NFL draft earlier this year, Sanders said he didn’t want them to worry about him or get distracted from their goals.  

“They didn’t know what the extent of it was,” Sanders told reporters, per ESPN.

The former NFL star also revealed that he changed his cellphone number a couple of times because he didn’t want to talk to people. He shared some humor despite the seriousness of the situation.

“I can’t pee like I used to,” Sanders said with a laugh as he talked about life after having his bladder removed. “I depend on Depends. … I’m making a joke out of it, but it is real. It is real. It is real. If you see a port-a-potty on the sideline, it is real, I’m just telling you. You’re going to see one at practice, on the sideline [in games].”

After staying quiet for months, the Colorado coach said he is now speaking up in hopes of inspiring people to get checked regularly.

“Get checked out, get checked out,” Sanders said. “It could have been a whole other kind of gathering if I didn’t. … Everyone knows someone who is affected or infected by the ‘C’ word.”

Sanders’ resilliance has been praised

Kukreja said doctors used parts of Sanders’ small intestine to make a replacement bladder and that he is now cancer-free, though he remains active in his recovery.

Meanwhile, Askevold praised Sanders for his resilience.

“He never folded one time and never wavered,” Askevold said, per ESPN. “You couldn’t ask for a better patient because he wants to get up and get going right. So it’s been awesome. It’s been a hectic journey, but there’s a blessing very in disguise with all this.”
