Rep. Jasmine Crockett, D-Texas, criticized the Trump administration’s plan to deploy Immigration and Customs Enforcement raids in Democratic-led cities, comparing the strategy to antebellum slave patrols.

Crockett likens the Trump administration’s ICE raids to ‘slave patrols’

Crockett candidly discussed the issue with MSNBC’s Ali Velshi on Sunday, stating that sending federal agents into these cities does not improve public safety. She also drew parallels between Trump’s deployment of militarized police and the Southern “slave patrol” tactic, where white men would hunt down escaped enslaved people, Black Enterprise reported.

“As somebody who understands history, when I see ICE, I see slave patrols,” Crockett told Velshi during the interview.

She continued, “But as somebody who understands history, when I see slave patrols — now, I never lived through the slave patrol period — but if you know the history of policing in this country, then you understand that they were born out of slave patrols. And now with the Supreme Court saying this, it’s almost like you can just go grab them up.”

Crimes by white supremacists vs. crimes by undocumented immigrants

The administration has focused on cracking down on migrant crime nationwide. The recent death of 20-year-old Kayla Hamilton, who was sexually assaulted and strangled by an undocumented immigrant, drew renewed attention from conservative leaders. But Crockett said white supremacists commit murders at far higher rates than undocumented immigrants.

“None of us want to be unsafe. Yeah, but we’re not looking at the facts,” Crockett said. “We’re not look at the fact that immigrants, regardless of how many times you’re going to cherry-pick and say, ‘Well, there was this one immigrant that was here illegally, and they ended up killing this one person.’ Well, for every immigrant that you have an example of, I’ll raise you at least two to five white supremacists, if not more, right?”

The congressperson also criticized a recent Supreme Court decision that permits federal agents to broadly target immigrants in Los Angeles, warning it could allow people to be questioned simply for speaking Spanish, per Black Enterprise. She said the ruling highlights the importance of Americans understanding Black history and how these acts have been done before.

“It’s almost like you can just go grab them up — that is what they’re saying. And that is a problem,” Crockett said. “We all should have a problem with that. But when you don’t want to teach American history, that includes Black history, then you lose out on the benefit of understanding that we have been down this road before, and it was not good, and we fixed it once, and it is a shame that we are relitigating this and we are going to have to fix it again.”

Crockett has been very vocal in criticizing Trump and his administration on immigration, the economy and the financial strain on the American people, as well as safety for lawmakers and other issues.

A former teacher of Celeste Rivas, the 15-year-old girl whose remains were found in an impounded Tesla registered to singer D4vd, is sharing details about the victim.

What did the teacher say about Celeste Rivas?

The science teacher shared a photo on his phone of himself and Rivas with his class. They were standing in front of a poster hung in the classroom, according to a video obtained by TMZ and Complex.

Another image has since surfaced during this investigation, showing D4vd just 0.3 miles away from the area where Rivas used to live before she vanished. The educator also said that the other person in the photo was another former student he had taught years ago.

In the video, the unidentified teacher told the students that Rivas had been missing since she was part of his class. Although there is no information available about the other student, the educator stated that both teens were his students when he taught at Lakeland Village Middle School in Lake Elsinore, California. He no longer works at that school.

Celeste Rivas had two runaway attempts, according to her former teacher

The teacher continued, stating that after Rivas had met D4vd, she had initially run away from home but was later returned by the police.

“When I taught her, she met this dude on social media. He was a rapper in LA,” he said in the video, referring to Rivas and D4vd. “He came and got her. She ran away from home. She was gone for, like, a month. The cops found her in Hollywood [and] brought her back to our school.”

“She came back to our school, kinda told people this story,” he added. “She disappeared again in May of that year, May of 2024.”

As Complex reported, “the teenager had a “Shhh” tattoo on her right index finger, which the singer also sports on the same location.”

When did police identify the body of Celeste Rivas?

After her second disappearance, the teacher said that was the last he had heard about her until recently finding out that the human remains found in the vehicle had belonged to her. He confirmed with TMZ that during the time Rivas was in his class, she was consistently absent, and he had no prior knowledge about her life.

While teaching at a school in Southern California, the educator said that sharing that information with his students helped inform them about the dangers of meeting people they had met online, per TMZ.

As Blavity reported, police identified Rivas, whose body was found inside a bag in the trunk of the vehicle on Sept. 8 at the Hollywood Tow car lot in Los Angeles on Wednesday. The Los Angeles County medical examiner’s office listed the official cause of death as “deferred.”

On Friday, it was announced that D4vd’s tour had been canceled amid the investigation.

New details have emerged in the ongoing investigation of Ky Frost, the son of Love & Hip-Hop: Atlanta stars Kirk and Rasheeda Frost, and his alleged involvement in Atlanta rapper T-Hood’s death in August.

How was Ky Frost involved in T-Hood’s death?

Blavity reported that T-Hood, born Tevin Hood, was shot and killed on the evening of Aug. 8 during a domestic violence dispute at an Atlanta-area home, and Ky, 24, was named the primary suspect. Hood, 33, was reportedly dating Kirk’s daughter, Kelsie Frost, and the shooting occurred sometime after Ky had arrived at the residence.

A police spokesperson familiar with the matter told TMZ that Hood was the aggressor that night, and an altercation allegedly ensued between them, with the rapper pulling out a firearm. Ky allegedly had his own weapon and drew it first, fatally shooting Hood, per the outlet.

Initially, the Gwinnett County Police Department believed the gunman acted in self-defense. After weeks of investigating, police confirmed this and sent a final report to the D.A., who will determine whether Ky faces charges in Hood’s death.

What did Kelsie Forst say about the shooting?

“Currently, there is no evidence to suggest the involvement of additional parties beyond those residing in the home. Although the investigation is still ongoing and additional information will be released when it becomes available, this case is being investigated as a possible self-defense shooting,” the Gwinnett County Police Department said in an earlier update following the incident.

Kelsie also spoke out about Hood’s death, calling out those spreading their own narratives.

“I can’t sit back and let the narrative being created go on. The love of my life is GONE. The man I lay with and cuddle every single night…is no longer here. So as I want to ask for respect and privacy, I won’t because I will always defend my baby. I don’t condone this s**t in any way, shape, form or fashion. I am sick to my stomach. I don’t wish this on anyone,” she wrote on Instagram Stories about the incident.

A new media guide has been launched to create standards and improve equity in the way that missing person cases are covered in the news. The guide seeks to address biases in coverage that lead to missing Black people receiving significantly less attention than their white counterparts. The guide represents part of a larger set of efforts to bring greater attention to the cases of missing Black people in the United States.

New guide to establish standards, fight bias in missing person reporting

The Black and Missing Foundation, Inc. and the Washington Association of Black Journalists issued a news release Tuesday announcing the launch of The Media Guide for Reporting on Missing Persons. The guide is described in the news release as “a comprehensive resource designed to address long-standing disparities in media coverage of missing persons cases, especially those involving people of color.” The publication comes after a year of collaborative work between the two organizations. The guide is described as a practical resource for newsrooms and reporters to help set standards and remove bias concerning coverage of missing persons.

Per the news release, BAMFI co-founder Natalie Wilson addressed a lack of standards in how missing persons are covered by news agencies and said the guide is crucial “to ensure that media coverage of missing persons is fair and consistent and ensures that missing persons cases receive the attention they deserve.”

WABJ President Phil Lewis said, “For too long, newsrooms across the country have overlooked the stories of missing persons of color,” according to the news release. He continued, “We hope that this media guide will help empower journalists and newsroom leaders to cover these stories accurately and appropriately.”

News agencies are invited to request copies of the guide, and BAMFI and WABJ are offering to send personnel to journalism classes and student news organizations to teach principles from the guide.

As people of color disproportionately go missing, new efforts fight disparities in response

According to the Black and Missing Foundation, over 563,000 people were reported missing in the United States in 2023. Forty percent of those were people of color, including over 162,000 children of color. Despite the prevalence of missing persons cases, federal standards are lacking for how to record data and investigate such cases. When it comes to missing Black people, there is often a lack of news coverage when compared to cases involving white people.

In recent years, various efforts have been launched to address these disparities. As Blavity reported, California enacted an Ebony Alert system in 2023, modeled after the Amber Alert System for missing children but focused on Black women and children. The National Newspaper Publishers Association recently unveiled its Missing & Black 2025 campaign, which “plans to harness digital storytelling, social media outreach and community partnerships to challenge implicit biases and elevate the urgency surrounding missing Black individuals.” The campaign also seeks to mobilize Black media personalities to publicize specific cases of missing Black people.

Now, the Media Guide for Reporting on Missing Persons is available as one more tool to ensure that missing people of color get the attention that their cases need and that other cases receive. With Black people and other minority populations disproportionately represented among the missing, all these resources are crucial to solve more of these cases.

Comedian and late-night show host Jimmy Kimmel has been removed from the air by ABC after the Trump administration and many of its followers objected to comments he made about the MAGA movement in the wake of Charlie Kirk’s killing. The removal appears to be tied to government scrutiny and business interests, with many calling out the administration and ABC for censorship and infringement upon free speech.

The New York Times reported Wednesday that Jimmy Kimmel Live! has been pulled from the air “indefinitely.” Anonymous sources indicated to The New York Times that Robert Iger, chief executive of ABC’s parent company Disney, and Dana Walden, Disney’s television chief, made the decision to suspend the show. Although Disney and ABC did not publicly comment on the reasoning for Kimmel’s suspension, it appears to be in reaction to conservative outrage over Kimmel’s comments relating to the killing of conservative activist Charlie Kirk. In his monologue Monday night, Kimmel criticized President Donald Trump for answering a question about Kirk with a boast about the new White House ballroom and called out “the MAGA gang desperately trying to characterize this kid who murdered Charlie Kirk as anything other than one of them, and doing everything they can to score political points from it, in between the finger-pointing.”

Government and corporate pressure led up to Disney benching Kimmel

Kimmel’s comments drew criticism not only from conservatives online but also from the Trump administration. On Wednesday, FCC Chair Brendan Carr, a Trump appointee, threatened FCC action against Kimmel and urged Disney to take Kimmel off the air. “These companies can find ways to change conduct and take action, frankly, on Kimmel, or there’s going to be additional work for the FCC ahead.” Carr said on The Benny Show. “Frankly, I think that it’s really sort of past time that a lot of these licensed broadcasters themselves push back on Comcast and Disney and say, ‘Listen, we are going to pre-empt, we are not going to run Kimmel anymore until you straighten this out.”

Shortly after this, Nexstar — a company which owns various ABC affiliates and which is seeking FCC approval for a $6 billion acquisition of another company — announced that its stations would refuse to broadcast Kimmel’s show “for the foreseeable future” over its objections to his comments about Kirk. Sinclair Broadcasting Group, the largest of the ABC affiliate companies, also announced it was preempting the Kimmel show, calling on the host to apologize to the Kirk family, and calling on ABC to make a “meaningful donation” to the Kirk family and to Turning Point USA, the organization that Kirk founded. These decisions reportedly pressured Disney to take Kimmel off the air; Disney also needs the Trump administration’s approval for a deal it is making concerning the NFL Network.

Trump suggests more late-night hosts may be targeted

The apparent influence that the Trump administration played in Kimmel’s removal is leading many on the left and some on the right to complain of censorship. Trump himself took to social media to celebrate Kimmel being “CANCELED” and suggested that NBC late-night hosts Jimmy Fallon and Seth Meyers may be future targets. “Kimmel has ZERO talent, and worse ratings than even Colbert, if that’s possible,” Trump posted, making a reference to the canceling of The Late Show with Stephen Colbert by CBS, a move that many viewed as backlash for Colbert’s criticism of Trump. The president continued, “That leaves Jimmy and Seth, two total losers, on Fake News NBC. Their ratings are also horrible. Do it NBC!!! President DJT,” the president continued.

With the cancellation of Colbert’s show and the suspension against Kimmel, it appears that critics of the Trump administration are being silenced across late-night television. Alongside events like the firing of Washington Post columnist Karen Attiah over posts critical of conservatives, a disturbing trend is emerging by which major media companies are censoring their own voices over criticism of Trump and his supporters.

Starbucks employees in three states have recently filed class-action lawsuits against the coffee chain, alleging violations of the law and claiming that the company failed to reimburse them after they purchased new clothes.

Which states have filed the class-action lawsuits against Starbucks?

CBS News reported that Starbucks workers, backed by unions, have filed class-action lawsuits in state courts in Illinois and Colorado. Those in California have also taken legal action by filing complaints with the state’s Labor and Workforce Development Agency, per CBS News.

If the agency chooses not to penalize Starbucks, employees may move forward with a class-action lawsuit in California, according to the documents.

The company defended the new dress code Wednesday, stating that it would create a “consistent” experience for both workers and customers.

What did Starbucks say about the policy change?

“As part of this change, and to ensure out partners were prepared, partners received two shirts at no cost,” the company said, according to CBS News. (Starbucks calls its employees “partners.”)

Since Starbucks announced its new dress code, employees have pushed back against it. In May, more than 2,000 baristas at 120 U.S. stores staged a strike to protest the policy, which limits workers to solid black shirts and khaki, black or blue denim bottoms, according to The Associated Press.

Starbucks Workers United, representing 570 of the company’s 10,000 U.S. stores, argues that the dress code should be subject to collective bargaining and has filed complaints with the National Labor Relations Board. Some company employees have stated that the move has taken the focus away from other important things to be concerned about.

The new dress code took effect in stores across the U.S. and Canada on May 12. Starbucks initially announced the policy change in April, stating that the uniforms would stand out, in addition to the standard green apron, Blavity reported.

“By updating our dress code, we can deliver a more consistent coffeehouse experience that will also bring simpler and clearer guidance to our partners, which means they can focus on what matters most, crafting great beverages and fostering connections with customers,” the coffee chain stated in a news release at the time.

‘I think it’s extremely tone deaf’

Some employees have expressed concerns about the financial impact of the new dress code, as they are not receiving reimbursement.

Brooke Allen, a full-time college student as well as a Starbucks barista at a store in Davis, California, said her manager told her in July that the Crocs she would typically wear were prohibited due to the policy change, and that she would have to wear proper footwear to work the following day, The New York Post reported.

Allen said she visited three different stores to find the right shoes, which cost her $60.09. She spent an additional $86.95 on new clothes, which included black shirts and jeans.

“I think it’s extremely tone deaf on the company’s part to expect their employees to completely redesign their wardrobe without any compensation,” Allen said, per The New York Post. “A lot of us are already living paycheck to paycheck.”

In addition to Allen, other Starbucks employees have requested reimbursement for clothing and the removal of other prohibited items, such as piercings, but their requests were denied.
